The Tome of Gothren Mission 2 - The Ritual

Inside the hut, the Sorcerer realise that the woman is like the creatures in the wilds, she is a Null. He skin crawls as she states that she knows why they are in this planet: the seek Gothren and his ritual. The problem is that to reach the ritual site, they must cross the Torment. Obviously, that would be almost impossible at this point, and waiting is not an option, because Irkalia also states that this could last for months or more.

Irkalia proposes that she can take the group with her into the cave where Gothren is, not only does she knows where he went before dying, but she can use her powers as a null to create a barrier that should protect the warband and allow them to reach the cave.

The player, RPing his sorcerer, asked what does she wants and how does she know this.

Irkalia responds with that she wants a favor that she will ask later, and she knows because she has been living in this planet for years and know a lot about it. To show a degree of trust, she tells the warband that Gothren didn't survive because he was attacked by a disciple of the Saint, Corban.

So the warband agree with her proposal. Irkalia goes into a room of her hut and change gear, equipping herself with a black carapace armor, two strange obsidian pistols and a strange sword.

IMG_20160325_183508255_zps3mgs0bel.jpgShe raises her arms to the sky, and a black but transparent bubble covers the Warband, they are protected from the souls, but the Sorcerer realise that he focus the powers of the warp inside of it.

They walk through the Torment, sometimes hearing noises of others creatures, but never being really attacked, until they finally reach the cave where Gothren died.

THE RITUAL

Inside the cavern, the warband finds the ruins of a Chaos ritual with Gothren in the middle. His ancient terminator armor raises a tome in his hands. What truly makes the scene chilling is the dozens of guardsmen bodies on the ground. Irkalia explains that these are the battlegroup of Corban, one of the Saint's primary disciples, he was hunting Gothren to end his life once and for all, but was killed by the sorcerer before having the chance to finish this work. She is not certain what happened, but Gothren died before finishing his ritual.

Numasar walks into the chaos ruin and analyses the situation, quickly he understands that Gothren was using the world's own Torment of Souls to power the Tome. He knows how to finish the ritual and then use it for himself.

Before taking position inside the cave, Gothren summon two allies from his warband. He opens a wound into reality, and from it a hodded pistoleer and a horned swordsman come forth. Phercy the Chosen and Baudnar the Malefic stand ready to fight for Numasar.

Numasar explained that to finish his spell he must focus enterily into it. So he needs the Warband to protect him. The Warband understands, but strangely Irkalia positions herself to also fight. Numasar makes no comment out of this, for he knows that if she tries something the others would kill her just as quickly.

As the ritual began, a pillar of souls descended unto the Tome, fueling with pure warp power, but some souls diverted from it and spilled and possessed the bodies of the dead guardsman, raising them. These creatures not only were akin to deamons, but they also still retained some of the skill and operational knowledge of the weapons and gear that this bodies used it once.

As they raised, as they walked, they attacked the Warband and Irkalia.

IMG_20160325_184922979_zpszqqytltd.jpg

Khazar the Putrid, being the indomitable and resilient warrior he is, stayed closed to the sorcerer, using his body to shield him.

IMG_20160325_184929810_zpsefmdctxa.jpg
Valnir the Silvequick as his name states, moved from point to point of the cavern, seeking the soldiers that the rest of the Warband would take too much time to kill, using his sword to decimate enemies with lightning fast precision.

IMG_20160325_184942880_zpsgccfnkdx.jpg

Phercy and Irkalia, the two gunslingers killed enemies left and right, though the marine was skillful with his pistols, he realised that the strange null woman had almost perfect aim with her strange pistols. Not only that, but the possessed guardsmen seem to die easier to her bullets.

IMG_20160325_185004707_zpsxs9unzpq.jpg

The fight began taking it's toll. Something was wrong with Baudnar, not only his Plasma pistol exploded twice right onto himself, once wounding him quite badly, but the possessed guardmen were surviving his attacks, and they were overwhelming his position.

Phercy was also in dire straits, getting shot by plasma and taking many serious wounds as the battle went forth. As many as he killed, he would still get hurt.
20160325_204409_zpsb6wj7qla.jpg

Irkalia was doing well by herself, her shots killing every guardsmen she took aim at. Even though they had the strenght of the Neverborn, she could hit and wound them easily enough to kill them.

20160325_191133_zpshrayn02f.jpg

The Putrid jumped from the Ritual base as Baudnar fell onto the ground wounded.

20160325_204359_zpsvdhru5fp.jpg

Vaulnir did the same, supporting the other part of the same side.

20160325_191125_zps7am4qpzr.jpg

When the body of Corban was raised from the ground, Irkalia yelled to the Numasar:
"Sorcerer! Fulfill your promise! I will be the one to kill Corban!"
The psyker didn't even looked at her, he just gave a nod that made the warband to understand that this was her due.

With her obsidian pistols she managed to wound Corban, but his possessed form broke from reality for a few seconds allowing the corpse to stand. Seeing this, Irkalia removed an Eclipse blade from her scabbard and charged the Saint's disciple. In a duel, they fought, the corpse removed his own sword a twin blade of the same aspect of Irkalia's but the color of dawn. Though she could hurt the corpse easily, the Saint's disciple was too strong and struck her down with his weapon. She fell on the ground, and the corpse began walking towards the sorcerer.

Through sheer willpower, Irkalia raised herself from death, shot Corban on the back and the corpse fell on the ground. She moved to another target, at first satisfied, but then with a quick glance she realised that the disciple was walking again. Irkalia charged once more, but once again was struck down.

Numasar finished the Tome, but instead of using it, he charged Corban and challenge it to a duel. It laste a few seconds, the sheer aspect of the neverborn allowing it to survive the worst of the trauma, but finally dying.

Though the ritual was finished, the toll of bodies were clear. Phercy and Baudnar didn't survive the battle, and Irkalia herself though seeminly struck down simply disappeared from sight. The sorcerer renamed the relic as The Tome of Numasar, for he would not wield such a weapon with the name of a fallen warlord that could not even face a few guardmen and a zealot.

Adventure: The Tome of Gothren - Prelude and First Mission

Prelude:

Numasar is a powerful sorcerer that not only can travel by creating Warp Portals (a skill that alone interested many lords and followers), but he is also skilled in Soothsaying. He received a vision, one that showed him what happened to Gothren, one of the Seven.

Hexus is a world on the Fringes, a quite distant group of systems where few ever go to due to it's distance from the regular trade and secure routes of the Imperium. In this world, Numasar saw Gothren casting a powerful spell, this mighty sorcerer intent on creating a relic of great power. The vision also showed a group of Astra Militarum invading the planet, and soon after the body of Gothren fallen on the ground.

Numasar, a seeker of glory and power decided to go to this planet, and strangely, he knew how to reach by using his Warp Portals. As such he opened one to the planet, and found himself under a sky without light and stars, with only the bright of his Chaos Space Marines equipment visible through naked eye.

First Mission - The Storm of Souls

The Warband walked through a forest that at first, it seemed quite safe. The player thought he would find the Tome somewhere in the first board (though I did say there were at least two other missions beside this one). So, this is more what happened after the player walked from the small table edge (because that is where the Warp Portal was based). The reason why the Bezerker was so way up front was due to his Infiltrate special rule (which I justify it was his eagerness to get into the fray that he just ran first before the rest of the squad could pass through the portal).

IMG_20160325_141916974_zpsnrnwkyz9.jpg
As the Warband walked through the land the Sorcerer summoned a Bloodletter from the Warp Portal.

After it they heard a noise from south (the small table edge that they walked from), and it was like hundreds of voices moaning and yelling in pain. After this, yellow eyes appeared inside the trees, and the Warband saw a group of wolves lead by a strange frog-like creature: These creatures, Numasar realised that something was quite wrong about them. As they got closer, he understood that they were all NULLS, anti-psyker creatures that had no presence in the warp.

IMG_20160325_143513679_zps90seogqa.jpg
Battle began, I decided that since they just showed up, the creatures couldn't charge the Warband. The Berzerker, the Ex-World Eater and Valnir charged after them, their Butcher's Nails ticking fast and sending spasms and adrenaline through their bodies.

After this a giant mist wall appeared from the south. Inside it, the Warband could see hundreds of souls, skeletal transparent blue creatures, their hands and arms flailing and reaching forwards trying to grab the chaos warriors. They were moaning and screaming.

Numasar, being the highly intelligent and knowledgeable sorcerer that he is, he knows the name of this "weather effect" is the Torment of Souls. And that is extremely dangerous.

Inside the Torment of Souls, the Warband saw a group of Null Hunters running inside of it. Smelling the taint of the Warp inside the Sorcerer, they move in to kill and devour him. The flail their tonges and pull the Sorcerer back to inside the Torment.
IMG_20160325_150502996_zpsxrisplj5.jpg

The Sorcerer was pulled back by the frog-like creatures, using their tongues to get him inside the torment. Realising that his lord is in trouble, finish a squad of the monsters, and go after these not realising the danger of the Torment of Souls. While this happens, the Unholly get downed on the other side of battle.
20160325_163637_zps6jkmjb4v.jpg

They manage to kill the enemy, but begin suffering a lot of damage, Aeknar even falls to the ground, The Bezerker's Nails hit even faster do may even risck complete degenaration. The sorcerer survived mostly by master over the warp. Numasar commands his Warband to run  north! As far away from the Torment as they can!

20160325_164927_zpspd1hmrpn.jpg
IMG_20160325_164912909_zpsugyxejfx.jpg

Valnir moved straight to the front:
IMG_20160325_152709389_zpsbrt0gdlr.jpg
IMG_20160325_152717634_zpsielbhtq3.jpg

And he engages enemies, killing squad of nulls that show up and might cause trouble for the rest of the Warband if they go inside the Torment., using his sublime skill of the blade and as titled he is, he moved to fast for the creatures to follow. Killing them with speed and ease.
IMG_20160325_163626949_zpsrp5zwnpy.jpg

More creatures show up. Ready to bring the end to the Warband, they come from the sides of the table.
IMG_20160325_150510025_zpsjqvqr2nm.jpg

The Warband ran as far as they can, however suffering the touch of the raw warp and the souls of the damned. Though they kill all the enemies that ran at them, the Bezerker and the Unholly suffer with so little protection they have. Aeknar falls to ground, losing blood, but only moving through sheer force of will. The pain is worse because of the Butcher's Nails burning and ticking wrong because of the raw warp.
20160325_170517_zps4ztxc5ix.jpg

Numasar summoned Nerglings, creatures that already lived in the warp to hold the monsters while the Warband runs to the north.
20160325_170510_zpsr2mkh9iw.jpg

They find a strange hut close to a lake, and Numasar see that it's protected by runes scibred in blood. His mind races, and he understand that could be salvation, with a command they run inside of it, and find themselves protected by the small wooden hut. Before having the chance to catach their breaths, Aeknar fall on the ground, spasming with the overeffects of the Butcher's Nails, dying in the process. Valnir realises that the Berzerker only stand dut to his madness, because his body is long gone. They are both dead.

Before lamenting their demise, a woman, blonde and eerily young appears before the warband, and they realise something is strange about her. Valnir and Khazar realise that herself WRONG even for depraved and putrid like them. Numasar knows why.
"You are a null, are you not?'"
"Yes, Sorcerer. I am also Irkalia, and I have a proposal."

Chaos Death Squad First Player

Hey!

So, my first player, that I shall name "M" was interested in the Chaos Deathsquad system after watching the Miniwargaming Deathsquad narrative videos. So I adapted the whole thing for Chaos, and after it he made the few characters in this post.

My friend didn't really decided his warband name (though the whole army is the Cult of Shadows). But here are his forces, he named them through the Path fo Glory name generator (and they hilariously were titled randomly, so it was by chance they got those names):

20160325_172233_zpsx5uydhmw.jpg

Numasar Menaroth, the Whisperer
20160325_142015_zpsfhclgute.jpg
He got Tough as a special rule, being an ex-Black Legion warrior and is a psyker that I allowed two
powers:

Dark Flame and Summoning, however this one is modified, he instead summon one deamon only (instead of squads) and with a single warp charge.

Valnir, the Silver Quick
20160325_142003_zpsarsy3nqy.jpg

A Renegade Space Marine Raptor, he is marked by slanessh and rolled the Stealth special rule.

Khazar the Putrid
20160325_142040_zpsdpy9a07d.jpg

Basically, a Plague Marine that began with Adamantium Will.

Fezrak the Berseker

A Berzerker of Khorrne, that had the Infiltrate special rule.

Aeknar the Unholly

An Ex-World Eater blessed by Khorne. He began the game with Move Through Cover.

Storyline

The sector of Madrigal was once dominated by The Seven, a mighty group of Chaos Lords, Sorcerers, Deamon Princes and leaders. The mighties of those was Torak Gan, the Archpriest of Chaos, who swayed entire worlds under his command.

However everything change when the Saint came.

No one is certain her origins. Some say she was a Sister of Battle with an entire Order formed in her name. Others claim that she was a Guardswoman from the Astra Militarum. And a few more daring even say that she was an Inquisitor of the Ordo Malleus.

What truly matters is that she led the forces of the Imperium in a glorious and mighty crusade that defeated the Seven, and took control of Madrigal once and for all. But the blood of martyrs makes the cobblestone of the Imperium, and as such she died in battle against Torak Gan, the last of the Chaos Lords to fall.

Now, though the Imperium may feel safe, Warbands of Chaos Space Marines scavenge battlefields and seek lost relics to bring the will of the Gods once more to Madrigal and become one of the new Lords of the sector.

Chaos Deathsquad rules

Chaos Death Squad

The Rules:

So the rules of Chaos Deathsquad are based, first, on the Warhammer 40.000 system (now in its 7th edition). Second, the Heralds of Ruin Kill Team Rules that you can get right here. And thirdly, on my personal adaptation from the Deathwatch narrative games from Miniwargaming.

First, you get the adapted for Chaos rules: right here.

However instead of using the MWG character development rules, I decided to improve it, so now we use the following:https://www.dropbox.com/home?preview=Development+Table.docx

This makes character development less random, but it still makes it impossible for the player to only maximize, say Close Combat. He will need other traits so that his character can still be effective. Also, some of those names were created for the sake of Fluff of my universe.

As I GM this game more, I may add other interesting rules for it. One of them that I will reserve for a GM Workshop is one that ties Character Stats (like Initiative or Weapon Skill) and personal backstories (it's quite simple, but it may need some thinking).

Hope to see you again!

Ranwulf
Welcome!

I'm Ranwulf, I'm a brazillian nerd that enjoys playing a variety of RPGs and tabletopgames. This blog will be dedicated mostly to the homebrew game of Deathsquad.

Deathsquad uses the Kill Team Heralds of Ruin rules, Miniwargaming Deathwatch rules (which inspired me to play this), and my own personal developments. As I post this, the game helps the player and the GM to make a Chaos Space Marines storyline.

If you know Kill Team, then you know that this is based on the Warhammer 40.000 system, but using less miniatures for a more narrative game. Which is the reason why I love this system and idea, what truly makes the 40K universe special for me its the universe, the fluff, the storylines.

I'm very aware that this system is NOT the best for Roleplay, but it is great to forge a narrative,

I will post the Kill Team rules and the Deathsquad rules on another post, alongside some game moments, cool stories, the background, and the GM Workshop (How clever am I, huh?) where I will post my ideas and missions of the game.

Hope to see you soon!
